Night of Champions Match Preview: WWE Champion CM Punk vs. John Cena

Night of Champions Match Preview: WWE Champion CM Punk vs. John Cena

Despite wearing the most cherished prize in the history of sports-entertainment around his waist, WWE Champion CM Punk insists he has been shortchanged respect. At Night of Champions, The Second City Saint will have his chance to gain the recognition he believes he’s owed when he puts his treasured WWE Title on the line against John Cena, who himself is hungry to reclaim the spot atop WWE's pecking order.

Since beginning his title reign last November, Punk has steadily turned away one challenger after another. He’s disposed of Dolph Ziggler, Chris Jericho, Daniel Bryan and Kane tough competition, all and at SummerSlam, he overcame sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famers Cena and Big Show, albeit under dubious circumstances, according to some.  Some argue that Punk stole the pin from Cena, while others argue that Punk exploited the rules of a Triple Threat Match.

Yet, over the course of his lengthy, 280-plus-day title reign the longest since Cena’s 380-day reign ended roughly a half-dozen years ago  rarely has Punk had the satisfaction of defending the WWE Championship in the main event of a WWE pay-per-view. Instead, that highly coveted and lucrative position on top of the card has often gone to the immensely marketable Cena, who despite his camera-friendly charm, has been in a championship drought since losing the WWE Title last September.

Rightly or wrongly, Punk contends he has unjustifiably taken a back seat to Cena and been relegated to semi-main event status, as a result. His outrage over this and other perceived snubs has only grown more apparent since Raw 1,000, when Punk shocked the WWE Universe by refusing to aid Cena (who was being attacked by Show) and ambushing The Rock. Since then, a darker, more sinister side of The Straight Edge Superstar has seemingly taken hold, culminating with an unprovoked attack against fan-favorite Jerry “The King” Lawler on the Aug. 20 edition of Raw when Lawler refused to recognize Punk as “Best in the World.” Punk trounced an overmatched “King” the following week, after Lawler agreed to face the champion in a Steel Cage Match.

Putting aside his issues with Lawler, Punk has appeared at times obsessed with the notion of getting the Cenation leader to concede that Punk is the best in the world. With the confidence befitting a champion, Cena has stalwartly refused, saying it is part of his DNA as a world-class competitor to not think of himself as anything less than the best.

Punk’s objective at Night of Champions is clear: He already sports the championship gold that signifies he’s the top Superstar in the world; on Sept. 16, he’ll have the opportunity to prove it to Cena. Though Punk holds numerous high-profile wins over Cena  including back-to-back WWE Title Match victories at last year’s Money in the Bank and SummerSlam events none of those accomplishments would have quite the same impact as besting Cena in Boston, the site of Night of Champions and a stone’s throw from Cena’s birthplace of West Newbury, Mass. Cena admitted as much on the Aug. 20 Raw.

“If you walk into Night of Champions the WWE Champion against me and somehow leave the WWE Champion, that is the moment that will define your existence,” the 10-time WWE Champion defiantly told Punk.

Counterintuitive as it may sound, Night of Champions will be a proving ground for the WWE Champion.

Punk, however, will not be alone in that regard. On the other side of the equation is Cena, who has been on the periphery of the WWE Title scene for the better part of a year. If he were to triumph over The Second City Saint, Cena would silence any critics who suggest his time has passed. Moreover, a win over Punk would theoretically either shut up the verbose champion or render groundless his claim that he’s the best in the world — surely a welcome development for a portion of the WWE Universe.

At Night of Champions, Punk’s long-stewing resentment toward Cena and Cena’s championship ambitions come to a head. Which force will prove more powerful? Can Cena reclaim the WWE Championship for an unprecedented 11th time? Or will the savvy Punk again slide by Cena en route to building one of the most remarkable WWE Championship reigns in the title’s almost 50-year history?

What’s known for sure is that the main event of Night of Champions will be much more than just a matter of “respect.”

WWE Monday Night RAW Results: 8/27/2012

in MILWAUKEE, Wis Not content with just beating Jerry “The King” Lawler in a RAWactive Steel Cage Match, WWE Champion CM Punk battered the WWE Hall of Famer senseless after the bout for refusing to call him “The Best in the World.” The carnage only ended when John Cena charged to ringside and demanded the cage be lifted.

John Cena def. Intercontinental Champion The Miz

In front of a WWE Universe split on showing support for John Cena, Intercontinental Champion The Miz looked to put away the Cenation leader. With an aggressive attack, Miz gave Cena all he could handle. But after a Five Knuckle Shuffle and hard-hitting Attitude Adjustment, Cena put away the Intercontinental Champion in a non-title bout.

WWE Champion CM Punk def. Jerry Lawler; John Cena rushes out to help Lawler

In a match decided by a RAWactive vote, WWE Champion CM Punk goaded Jerry Lawler into hitting him first to stat their bout. When the WWE  Hall of Famer took him up on his offer, he sent the stunned champion reeling. After the shock wore off, Punk mounted a dominating and punishing offense against Lawler.

At one point, Lawler struck Punk down and went for an escape from the cage. But the champion dragged him back to the center of the ring to exact more punishment. Next, Lawler battled back, shoving Punk face first into the stinging steel cage, then delivered a series of blows finished off with a clothesline and more punches. Then, after Lawler climbed to the second rope, he blasted Punk with a fist drop.

As the battle waged on, Punk put an end to the war by making Lawler submit to the Anaconda Vise.
But Punk wasn’t done yet.

After the win, Punk grabbed a lock and chain from under the ring and locked himself inside the steel cage with his downed opponent. With Lawler in his clutches and a microphone shoved in his face, Punk demanded Lawler call him the best in the world. When the WWE Hall of Famer remained defiant, Punk repeatedly pummeled him.

*With Lawler in severe pain, John Cena rushed to ringside and called for the cage to be lifted. Despite Cena’s presence, Punk continued reigning down more blows on Lawler. When the cage finally lifted, Punk quickly exited, while Cena and WWE  officials rushed in, coming to Lawler’s aid.

WWE Champion CM Punk confronts Jerry "The King" Lawler and John Cena
On Raw 1,000, Jerry "The King" Lawler said that CM Punk turned his back on the WWE Universe. Twenty-four hours after retaining the WWE Title in a Triple Threat Match against Big Show and John Cena at SummerSlam, WWE Champion CM Punk demanded an apology from the WWE Hall of Famer. But before Punk could get his apology, John Cena made his way to the ring.

The Straight Edge Superstar was clearly unhappy with Cena's interruption, claiming that since WrestleMania, the champion has taken a "back seat" to Cena, The Rock, Brock Lesnar and Triple H. Punk explained to Cena that he didn't mind out of respect. The WWE Champion reminded Cena and the WWE Universe how many times he has defeated the Cenation leader. With that in mind, CM Punk named his one condition for accepting the match: Cena must admit that The Second City Saint is the “Best in the World.”

Cena retorted that despite nine months of not being the WWE Champion, the Cenation was still strong because of the one thing CM Punk desired: respect. Cena refused to adhere to Punk's demand, because in his heart, he is the best.

The 10-time WWE Champion highlighted the stark contrasts between himself and the current champion and how he never demanded anything from anyone. Willing to sacrifice the No. 1 contendership, Cena would not give Punk what he wanted. Cena reminded The Straight Edge Superstar that if he wanted to prove he was the best once and for all, he must face Cena at Night of Champions.

After the Cenation leader left the ring, CM Punk once again turned his attention to Jerry Lawler, calling the WWE Hall of Famer into the ring to once again demand an apology. Lawler apologized, but the WWE Champion was still not satisfied and wanted "The King" to declare him the “Best in the World.”

The Memphis, Tenn., native refused and tried to return to the announce table only for CM Punk to kick him from behind. As Raw came to a close, the WWE Champion, still lacking whatever respect he felt was deserved, silently looked down at Lawler and to the WWE Universe.

WWE SummerSlam 2012 Pay-Per-View Results

Posted on 20:09 by Unknown
WWE SummerSlam 2012 Pay-Per-View Results
WWE Champion CM Punk def. John Cena, Big Show

LOS ANGELES – Three men entered, three men collided and three men fought. When the dust was settled and all was said and done, CM Punk — on the 274th day of his reign — was still standing tall as the WWE Champion, defeating John Cena and Big Show in a Triple Threat Match at The 25th Anniversary of SummerSlam.

For weeks, the embattled champion had been insisting that WWE had not been affording him due respect as its standard-bearer. He made a particular point of telling Raw General Manager AJ Lee that a Triple Threat Title Match — a contest where Punk would not even have to be pinned to lose his championship — was an extension of that mindset. And when Cena refused to shake Punk’s hand earlier in the week on Raw, The Second City Saint seemed to be in a particularly foul mood heading into WWE’s summer classic.

He was also in a particularly confident one, insisting that he would retain no matter who was in the ring with him. The Voice of the Voiceless proved to be a man of his word, although he had to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat to accomplish the task.

Punk began the match appropriately, storming into the City of Angels like a jilted, tattooed typhoon and opening the match with a bold strike against Big Show that, unfortunately, didn’t pay dividends. The World’s Largest Athlete had an early hand in the contest, manhandling Cena and Punk with minimal difficulty, backing up his own prediction that he, not Cena, would be the biggest threat to Punk’s title. Show made a methodical spectacle of his opponents, delivering thunderous, open-handed slaps — with his hubcap-sized hands — to the bare chests of both Punk and Cena that left the two men reeling and breathless on the apron.

Punk was the first to stop the giant’s onslaught, forcing Big Show to his knees and delivering a barrage of kicks to his tree-trunk torso. Punk then attempted a Go to Sleep that failed when he found himself unable to support the giant’s weight. Cena was next, hoisting Show up for an Attitude Adjustment that went sour when Punk interfered, sending Cena tumbling to the mat.

Show’s game plan — keep Cena neutralized and make it a one-on-one contest against Punk — seemed to be going well after the giant reversed a Punk crossbody to set him up for the WMD, but Cena’s re-emergence threw a slight wrench into Show’s plans.

The World’s Largest Athlete rallied quickly, though, stalking Punk outside the ring and hurling him like a rag doll into the ropes. Cena seemed to gain the upper hand briefly, felling the giant and nearly landing a Five Knuckle Shuffle before Punk caught the Cenation leader with a flying clothesline and hurling him out of the ring.

Punk made a play for victory next, locking Show in the Koji Clutch and attempting to make the giant submit. But Show rallied and broke the hold, opening the window for Cena to administer the STF. The World’s Largest Athlete powered out of that as well, stunning Cena with a powerslam and creating the opportunity for Punk to strike. Three running knees to the giant stunned him sufficiently enough for Punk to administer the Koji Clutch, while Cena locked the STF in again.

And then, the unthinkable happened: trapped in both holds and unable to escape, Big Show tapped.

But the night was not over.

With the result unsure, Punk and Cena livid in the ring and the referee unable to determine a winner, Raw GM AJ Lee made her presence known and demanded the contest be restarted.

Show struck quickly, stunning both men with a double chokeslam, though he was unable to pin either. The giant then readied the WMD for Cena, who had risen to his feet, but Cena rallied and finally, after weeks of failed efforts, executed the Attitude Adjustment on The World’s Largest Athlete.

And that’s when CM Punk made his move. The champion tossed Cena out of the ring and covered the prone giant himself, securing an opportunistic — if undeniable — victory and extending his reign even further.

So, as promised, the championship remains around CM Punk’s waist. Whether respect comes with it, however, remains to be seen.

WWE Monday Night RAW Results: 8/13/2012

WWE Monday Night RAW Results: 8/13/2012 in Dallas, TX

When Brock Lesnar warned Shawn Michaels that he'd see him before SummerSlam, no one ever imagined the kind of punishment Brock had in store for The Showstopper. What did Lesnar do to the WWE Hall of Famer to leave Triple H utterly enraged? Also, why did WWE Champion CM Punk feel he was disrespected again — this time by John Cena?

Big Show def. WWE Champion CM Punk via Disqualification in a Non-Title Match
Big Show manhandled the WWE Champion in the early going as CM Punk tried to stop the onslaught with sharp kicks to the midsection. The World's Largest Athlete took advantage of his massive strength and repeatedly planted Punk back down to the canvas. Almost toying with The Straight Edge Superstar, Big Show used his full weight to step on top of Punk while he lied face down on the canvas.

Punk seemed to weaken The World's Largest Athlete when he drilled him with a running knee in the corner, but Big Show responded with a crushing spear out of nowhere. Just then, Daniel Bryan came out to express his anger over not being in the Triple Threat Match to Jerry "The King" Lawler and Michael Cole at the announce booth. As the action continued, Bryan entered the ring and wrapped the painful "No!" Lock on The Second City Savior. More chaos ensued as John Cena rushed out and cleared the ring of both Big Show and Bryan.

Raw General Manager AJ Lee skipped out to the ring with a big surprise for all four Superstars: Bryan and Big Show will team up to face Punk and Cena in tonight's main event!

WWE Champion CM Punk & John Cena def. Big Show and Daniel Bryan
At the start of the match, Daniel Bryan was resistant to tagging in Big Show, shouting "No! No! No!" at him when The World's Largest Athlete wanted to enter the match. Once he was tagged in, Big Show quickly proved to be the most dominant Superstar in the contest. With turnbuckle splashes, clotheslines and a crushing bear hug, Big Show squeezed the energy out of John Cena. However, Bryan was unimpressed and tagged himself into the match. After briefly losing momentum, the team of Bryan & Big Show regained their edge behind the power of The World's Largest Athlete as CM Punk found himself trapped in the bear hug as well.

Bryan refused to let Big Show to assert his dominance for long. The submission specialist tagged himself back into the matchup, prompting Big Show to back out of the contest and watch as a bystander from the outside. Bryan laced Punk with sharp kicks to the midsection, but soon found himself reeling as the WWE Champion furiously rallied back. The Straight Edge Superstar proceeded to mimic Cena's signature maneuvers before the Cenation leader tagged himself in right as Punk was about to hit the Five-Knuckle Shuffle.

Cena returned the favor by imitating Punk's high knee and running bulldog combination on Bryan, which appeared to upset The Voice of the Voiceless as he walked back up the entrance way. As Cena exchanged words with Punk, Bryan tried to surprise the Cenation leader, but Cena planted the former World Heavyweight Champion with a big Attitude Adjustment to win the match.

Afterwards, Punk nailed Big Show with the WWE Championship right as The World's Largest Athlete attempted a sneak attack on Cena. Instead of attacking Cena as well, Punk extended his right hand to him, but the Cenation leader refused to shake it. Disgusted, Punk pulled his hand back and walked back up the entrance way. Backstage, The Second City Savior told Josh Mathews that Cena's refusal to shake his hand was "the ultimate sign of disrespect" and vowed to teach the entire WWE Universe something about respect at SummerSlam.

WWE Monday Night RAW Results: 8/6/2012

WWE Monday Night RAW Results: 8/6/2012 in SAN ANTONIO

Raw General Manager AJ Lee kicked off the night by announcing two big matches for Raw: Randy Orton vs. Big Show and John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan. As she was about to announce another match, WWE Champion CM Punk's music blared and The Straight Edge Superstar came out to the ring to apologize for letting the emotions get the better of him when he angrily confronted AJ last week on Raw. After the Raw GM accepted his apology, Punk told AJ she made a mistake by putting him a Triple Threat Match at SummerSlam and urged her to cancel the bout against Cena and Big Show, but the Raw GM refused to comply. The WWE Champion accused AJ of just trying to get back at him for when he rejected her marriage proposal in front of the whole WWE Universe.

Before Punk could plead further, John Cena interrupted The Second City Savior and called him out for turning into someone who demands respect instead of just commanding it. Punk fired back at the Cenation leader, telling Cena that he deserves the right to complain about being disrespected. After Punk and Cena exchanged some more harsh words, Big Show tried to enter the fray, but AJ stopped him dead in his tracks and said she wasn't going to let things get out of hand on her show. The Raw GM told Cena and Big Show they have matches to get ready for, and then revealed Punk also has a match of his own tonight — against an opponent of the WWE Universe's choosing from the following choices: Rey Mysterio, Kane or The Miz. AJ has quickly proven that she's not afraid to embrace the power of RAWactive now that she's in charge.

John Cena def. Daniel Bryan

Members of the WWE Universe didn't listen to Daniel Bryan when he demanded they stop chanting "Yes!" Instead, the crowd only seemed to shout it louder as the extremely aggravated Superstar faced John Cena one-on-one for the first time on Raw.

The Cenation leader grounded Bryan early on, but the submission specialist quickly turned the tables when Cena pursued him outside the ring. After landing a swift flying knee off the ring apron to Cena's face, Bryan continued to whip his opponent's midsection with hard kicks. Cena rallied back and appeared set to hit an Attitude Adjustment, but the resourceful Bryan slid off the Cenation leader's broad shoulders and locked in a guillotine chokehold with leg scissors.

After wearing Cena down with the submission maneuver, Bryan took to the air with a flying headbutt off the top rope and laced Cena's midsection with more vicious kicks. Remarkably, Cena rose back to his feet and locked in the STF, which Bryan reversed into the “No!” Lock. Refusing to submit, Cena powered out of the hold and sent Bryan crashing to the canvas with an AA to secure the thrilling win.

CM Punk was quick to spoil Cena's celebration, as he came out to the ring and held the WWE Championship above his head. Suddenly, Big Show rushed to the ring, but Cena saw him coming and shoved Punk out of the way. As Cena and The World's Largest Athlete tangled, Punk hit Big Show from behind, sending both men tumbling to the mat. The Straight Edge Superstar then turned his attention to the announce table, grabbing a headset and letting loose on Jerry "The King" Lawler again with a bitter tirade describing how this Raw would end the same way the last two did — with The Voice of the Voiceless standing tall and clutching his WWE Title.

Punk returned to the ring and moved to strike Big Show with a roundhouse kick to the head, but The World's Largest Athlete recovered and floored Punk with a WMD, then walloped Cena with a second knockout punch. With Punk's title now hanging over his shoulder, it was the mammoth Big Show — not the WWE Champion — who was standing tall as Raw went off the air this time.

Chris Masters talks about working with John Cena

Posted on 14:31 by Unknown

Chris Masters appeared on Inside The Ropes radio Thursday night and he mentions John Cena. He said the following below!
On working with John Cena in 2005/06: “That guy had some heavy fists. Carlito and I used to joke around that in tag matches with Cena and HBK, we would literally rush to get to Shawn Michaels, because he wasn’t as heavy with hands and the other guy would be stuck with Cena and you’d be potato’ing each other left and right. I remember at the Elimination Chamber I felt like I was in a real shoot fight. It’s not that he’s bad, he just gets really fired up and he’s got big hands, he doesn’t realise his own strength.”
