WrestleMania 29: WWE Champion The Rock vs. John Cena

WrestleMania 29: WWE Champion The Rock vs. John Cena

Less than a month after winning the Royal Rumble Match and announcing his intention of challenging for the WWE Title at WrestleMania 29, John Cena found out who his championship opposition will be on The Grandest Stage of Them All: The Rock.

The Great One upended CM Punk at Elimination Chamber, the last pay-per-view before The Show of Shows, to retain the cherished WWE Championship and solidify his place in WrestleMania’s main event.

In The Brahma Bull, Cena will be facing a foe who helped set in motion the tailspin of a year that was 2012.

A 10-time former WWE Champion, the Cenation leader has not held the title since October 2011, and the disappointment of his drought was exacerbated last year by his high-profile loss to The Great One at WrestleMania XXVIII. The devastating loss bookended one of Cena’s toughest calendar years, to date. A series of distractions, from dealing with former General Manager John Laurinaitis to falling into an ill-fated romance with AJ Lee, kept Cena away from the WWE Title picture for much of the year. And even once he found himself in title contention, he was unable to pry the WWE Title from Punk, making 2012 a largely unproductive year for one of the most decorated competitors in WWE history.

Fortunately for the Cenation leader, 2013 appears to be off to a markedly better start, thanks to his huge win at Royal Rumble. The larger question facing Cena is whether he will be able to keep the momentum going all the way to April 7, when he faces the Superstar who dealt him one of the biggest losses of his career.

The Rock has shown no signs of ring rust since returning to WWE and winning the WWE Title in January. In fact, The Great One overcame great obstacles — including The Shield and The Second City Saint’s underhanded tactics — en route to dethroning Punk and subsequently turning back his challenge in a rematch.

With The Rock and Cena informed by their epic encounter last year in Miami, both competitors will assuredly come to MetLife Stadium with a more sharpened focus than ever before. Cena is out to avenge last year’s WrestleMania loss to The Great One. The Rock, on the other hand, appears intent on keeping the championship he waited more than a decade to reclaim — the title that represents the sport that not only propelled him to success on the silver screen, but also captured his heart and mind at a young age.

Now, all that separates The Rock and John Cena is time. On April 7, under the brightest lights that sports-entertainment has to offer, who will leave will the top prize: The Rock or John Cena?

John Cena def. CM Punk to decide the No. 1 contender to the WWE Championship

Perhaps calling himself “God” was excessive self-praise for CM Punk. Perhaps The Straight Edge Superstar was resting too much on his laurels, and perhaps Monday in the American Airlines Center simply wasn’t his night, because John Cena managed to reverse nearly two years of bad luck against the former WWE Champion and pin CM Punk to punch his ticket to the WrestleMania main event in a bout 10-time WWE Champion had appropriately dubbed the “Thunderdome in Dallas.” The Cenation leader and the onetime “Voice of the Voiceless” have a rivalry that stretches back years, and they brought every moment of that mounting tension to a grueling, nearly half-hour-long contest with the biggest opportunity in sports-entertainment hanging in the balance.

Despite his defeat, let it never be said that Punk laid down and died against the 10-time WWE Champion. The Straight Edge Superstar battled his archrival like his life depended on it, using every hold, strike and aerial maneuver in his extensive arsenal to keep Cena at bay. Cena answered in kind time and again, employing an array of his own technical holds to gain the early momentum, but Punk would not be so easily quelled. The Straight Edge Superstar surged back by raining elbows on the back of Cena’s neck and applying a series of submission holds to sap the strength out of the 10-time WWE Champion.

The strategy seemed to work when Punk thwarted Cena’s signature shoulder blocks and seemingly regained control for good, but Cena surged back and the two took their fight to the ground, taking each other to the brink by trading their signature submission holds. The back-and-forth nearly sapped the strength from both men but Cena appeared to have the advantage when he plastered Punk with a powerbomb and a top-rope leg drop, but he couldn’t seal Punk up even with whiplash-inducing Attitude Adjustment out of nowhere, nor could Punk with a pair of Go to Sleeps or a rare piledriver that left the Cenation leader crumpled on the mat.

Punk’s frustration ultimately got the better of him, as The Straight Edge Superstar attempted a series of covers on Cena in a state of disbelief, wasting time that otherwise might have been spent further weakening the Cenation leader. Looking for one final maneuver to put the match away, Punk went up for the flying elbow but Cena dodged the attempt and sent Punk spinning with a hurricanrana. One Attitude Adjustment later to the stunned challenger and CM Punk was on his back, with John Cena headed to WrestleMania once more. And for the first time in a long, long time, CM Punk did not have a single thing to say.

"It takes a special kind of Superstar to attempt rebounding from a loss to The Shield with a challenge to CM Punk. Of course, the WWE Universe knows John Cena is a unique breed who never backs down from a fight — even if it means putting his WWE Title opportunity at WrestleMania 29 on the line."

John Cena challenged CM Punk to a WWE Championship No. 1 Contender’s Match
We’ll say this much for CM Punk: He does not go down without a fight. Like the proverbial bad penny, The Straight Edge Superstar just keeps coming back when the WWE Universe thinks he’s gone for good. This week, his machinations have ostensibly inserted him back into the WWE Title picture he was removed from just 24 hours earlier when The Rock retained his championship at Elimination Chamber. Punk’s latest scheme, however, was not targeted at The People’s Champion but instead at his old foil John Cena.

Cena, who declared his intention to challenge for the WWE Title at WrestleMania 29 several weeks prior, had barely begun to address the Cajundome crowd when Punk cut the Cenation leader off and attempted to provoke the proverbial bear, recalling Cena’s defeat at Rock’s hands at WrestleMania XXVIII and his numerous losses to Punk himself.

“The Rock beat me fair and square last night … and he beat you fair and square last year at WrestleMania,” Punk said. “But when we’re talking about wins and losses, you have never beat me. You have something that doesn’t belong to you.”

But Cena would not be quite so easily goaded. However, he did concede two points: He had never beaten Punk and he had never beaten The Rock. Cena had just the solution in mind to silence The Straight Edge Superstar as well as his critics, though.

“A match,” Cena said. “The big one. John Cena vs. CM Punk. If I win, you shut your mouth, crawl back in the hole you came from and go away.

“If you win, then you’re right. I don’t deserve to be in the main event of WrestleMania. If you beat me, you deserve it. My word, if you beat me in a match right here, right now, I will give you my WrestleMania title shot.”

Never one to welcome such a challenge on anyone’s terms but his own, The Straight Edge Superstar accepted the offer, with the caveat that it would happen next week.

“You just made the stupidest decision of your life,” Punk said after Cena had laid down the challenge. In one week’s time, the WWE Universe will know whether the onetime “Voice of the Voiceless” spoke the truth.

The Rock unveiled the new WWE Championship

Pour one out for the WWE Championship as we have known it for the past eight years, because even though The Rock is going to WrestleMania with the title in hand, well, let’s just say he’s switching up his style as champion in the process. The Great One officially turned the page in the annals of WWE history, revealing a brand-new WWE Championship to the Cajundome crowd and ushering in a new standard for all future champions to bear.

Let the record show, though, that The Rock gave the “spinner” WWE Title a gentle eulogy in its final moments, handing it off to a WWE official and requesting it be placed into the WWE Hall of Fame. Before turning to a velvet bag The Great One had set up on a pedestal in the middle of the ring. But let the record also show that the new WWE Title he unveiled was quite amazing. As the Cajundome crowd roared its approval, The Great One shouldered his new prize and turned his attention toward WrestleMania and his potential opponent.

“Between those two, there is one man who brings out the very best in The Rock. For professional reasons, for personal reasons, that man is …”

The revelation would have to wait, however, as John Cena picked that moment to crash The Brahma Bull’s party. Before the two old rivals could mix it up, though, CM Punk stormed out from the locker room area and felled Cena with a shot from the old WWE Championship. With Cena face-down on the ramp, Punk tossed the now-defunct design on its prone originator and hungrily eyed The Brahma Bull’s new championship.

“I want that one,” he sneered. And knowing Punk, there’s nothing he won’t do to make that statement a reality.

WWE Pay-Per-View Elimination Chamber 2013 Results

WWE Pay-Per-View Elimination Chamber 2013 Results

The Shield def. John Cena, Ryback & Sheamus
NEW ORLEANS — Justice, as prophesied by Dean Ambrose, was ultimately delivered at WWE Elimination Chamber. In a six-man collision between WWE’s top Superstars and its most menacing alliance, The Shield withstood the dream team of John Cena, Ryback and Sheamus, live at the New Orleans Arena.

Neither the NBA’s Eastern nor Western All-Star squads could rival the veritable “super team” of Cena, Sheamus and Ryback — the 12-time World Champion heading to the main event of WrestleMania 29, the powerhouse Celtic Warrior who held the World Heavyweight Title for much of 2012, and the white-hot rookie who’s ravenously dined upon competition. But on the grim stage of WWE’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, the Superstar trio stood an endangered species while in the sights of their jackal-like opposition, The Shield.

Cena, Sheamus and Ryback employed powerhouse plays like synchronized suplexes and more to wear down their rebel rivals across all four corners of the ring and beyond. Resilient as ever, The Shield countered with ruthlessness and their signature “divide and conquer” technique to decimate Sheamus (who was speared through the barricade), and then outnumber their opponents. The sum total of their scheme: Ryback took the crushing final hit and losing pinfall … and he wasn’t at all happy about it.

Impressive and chillingly vicious, the riot gear–garbed Shield aimed to exact a mission of reparation for a supposed “decade of injustice.” Prime targeted, Cena’s assembled force combatted a group that has torn through an entire roster of competitors, from Team Hell No to Brodus Clay and Tensai, since its debut in November.

Perhaps no two men were more so wronged by The Shield’s brand of righteousness than Cena and Ryback, who both were deprived of the WWE Championship following the intervention of Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns in their first appearance at Survivor Series 2012.

That night, Shield secretly served CM Punk; at WWE Elimination Chamber, the horde’s plot came full circle as they devastated Cena and Ryback (along with Sheamus) most definitively. The extent to which the Superstar constantly wanting to be fed more may have consumed more than even he can swallow from the triumvirate of insurgents.

The scene in New Orleans was much different than the site of two consecutive editions of Monday Night Raw heading into Elimination Chamber. For weeks, Cena and his allies ripped the primary page of Shield’s nefarious playbook, crossing through the crowd in a united front to besiege their enemies.

This, along with Cena’s momentum rolling out of the Royal Rumble en route to WrestleMania, stunned Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns and appeared to foretell the fall of the upstarts in just their second sanctioned WWE match.

In the heat of the action, though, Shield rebounded when it mattered most. After Roman Reigns crushed The Celtic Warrior’s body with a spear on the outside, he quickly rejoined his cohorts in the squared circle for a 3-on-2 showdown on those foes still standing, Cena and Ryback. With Ambrose up for an Attitude Adjustment, Reigns’ second spear connected with Ryback’s midsection as he simultaneously hoisted up Rollins. Alas, the Cenation leader laid out Shield’s frontman but couldn’t reach the pinfall in time to save Ryback (and his squad) from defeat—leaving the Superstars stunned and Ryback wrought with frustration.

The Shell-shocking Superstar succumbed to The Shield on pay-per-view, projecting the rebels to a status that’s arguably equivalent to unstoppable. Their upset triumph over WWE’s Cena’s super squad sends the 2013 Royal Rumble winner forth on The Road to WrestleMania with rocky propulsion. A thick, black dust settles and the WWE Universe ponders what lies ahead for each of these six Superstars as the hours pass before The Biggest Spectacle of Them All — a event, despite its grandeur, that perhaps is not above The Shield’s rendering of “justice,” should it be the nefarious group’s next target.

John Cena, Ryback & Sheamus def. 3MB
It is considered a travesty by some (not many, mind you, but some) that 3MB were snubbed entirely from last night’s Grammy awards ceremony, but the would-be rockers got their chance to shine in a Six-Man Tag Team Match against John Cena, Sheamus & Ryback. And when all was said and done … well, let’s just say their Monday night went about as well as their Sunday night did.

To be fair, it wasn’t like the fellas just rolled over and played dead for the strongmen. Drew McIntyre in particular got a few licks in against Sheamus, but Cena & Co. played a tune on the band nonetheless. Despite a final effort by 3MB to swarm their opponents en masse, Cena, Ryback & Sheamus punctuated the contest with a synchronized execution of White Noise, Shell Shocked and the Attitude Adjustment on each member of the beleaguered band, with Cena covering Jinder Mahal for the official pin.

As the lights dimmed on 3MB, though, Cena grabbed hold of a microphone and had a few post-performance words for The Shield. It appeared that, despite the fact he, Sheamus & Ryback are slated to face The Shield in an unprecedented Six-Man Tag Match, they weren’t interested in waiting till then to get a piece of the black-clad brawlers and all but dared The Shield to show their faces and get a taste of Cena, Ryback & Sheamus’ own particular version of justice.

John Cena, Ryback & Sheamus attacked The Shield

With The Shield having been called out by John Cena, Ryback & Sheamus just days before their collision at Elimination Chamber, the so-called keepers of justice came to the ring to air their grievances and explain their persistent targeting of the three Superstars they’ll be staring down come Sunday.

Their insistence on attacking those particular three Superstars, The Shield said, was that Cena had created an environment where a Superstar can say or do whatever he pleases without fear of reprisal. That mentality had spread to the likes of Sheamus and Ryback while they ran rampant throughout the WWE roster, decimating who they felt like and facing no consequences as a result. The Shield claimed this mentality enabled Superstars to live similarly consequence-free lives and that they would rectify the situation come Sunday in the Elimination Chamber.

“This Sunday, we have the opportunity to rectify a decade of injustice in one fell swoop,” Seth Rollins said before he, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose took up positions around the ring, beckoning their opponents to come out and face them.

It was then that Cena, Ryback & Sheamus delivered The Shield a taste of their own medicine, cutting the arena lights and ambushing in the dark. When visibility was restored, Ambrose, Rollins & Reigns were under heavy attack from their challengers and found themselves in a rare defensive position. Despite their best efforts, The Shield was overwhelmed for the second time in as many weeks, fleeing through the crowd and living to fight another day.

Elimination Chamber match preview: John Cena, Ryback & Sheamus vs. The Shield

Elimination Chamber match preview: John Cena, Ryback & Sheamus vs. The Shield

For months, the mysterious Shield triumvirate of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns has disrupted high-profile bouts and waged countless sneak attacks under the pretense of upholding “justice” in WWE. At Elimination Chamber, the brazen upstarts may get their own taste of justice, however, when they face the WWE super team of John Cena, Sheamus & Ryback.

One week after falling victim to The Shield’s numbers game, the Cenation leader recruited Sheamus and Ryback — other prominent Shield victims — and challenged the rebellious trio to a six-man tag just moments after the Feb. 4 edition of Raw went off the air.
Cena promised that at Elimination Chamber, The Shield would finally get a fair fight in the form of WWE’s super trio, whose three members have each had run-ins with the justice-seeking team. The open challenge came on the heels of a seeming groundswell of momentum working against The Shield.

Though largely unchallenged to date, Ambrose, Rollins & Reigns experienced perhaps their biggest setback following an attack on Brad Maddox. The ambush occurred at the invitation of the rogue referee, who challenged The Shield mere seconds after admitting to giving Mr. McMahon the video that revealed the trio’s alleged collusion with Paul Heyman and CM Punk.

While Ambrose, Rollins & Reigns were successful in downing the loudmouth Maddox, thrashing him with a Triple Powerbomb, they ran into trouble once Cena, Ryback and Sheamus — taking a page out of The Shield’s playbook — made a surprise entrance through the WWE Universe. With the help of a slew of WWE fan favorites who blocked The Shield’s exit up the Raw ramp, Cena, Sheamus & Ryback proudly turned back The Shield, sending them packing through the crowd.

The Shield’s first official sanctioned match in WWE, a chaotic Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match against WWE Tag Team Champions Team Hell No & Ryback in December, left the WWE Universe speechless and bolstered the group’s claims of dominance. But against one of the most impressive assemblies in WWE history, does the treacherous trio have a chance of improving their record to 2-0? Regardless of which team comes out on top Feb. 17, the WWE Universe will assuredly be watching with bated breath.

Brad Maddox called out The Shield and was attacked; John Cena, Ryback and Sheamus joined the fight and laid out a challenge

John Cena vowed to take his grievances to The Shield, but what the WWE Universe got instead was ... Brad Maddox?

Brad Maddox it was, then. The disgraced former referee was the one who took to the ring to summon The Shield for a lesson in so-called justice, revealing in the process that he had turned over the footage of Paul Heyman’s confession to Mr. McMahon the previous week and also christening himself the “hero” of the WWE Universe for exposing the heinous plot of the men in black to help keep CM Punk as WWE Champion. And then, in a maneuver that was perhaps short on sanity but not on courage, Maddox called The Shield out himself.

To put what happened next simply: They obliged him.

Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns materialized from the crowd when Maddox laid down his challenge, slandering him as a “rat.” As for their dealings with Heyman? Well as Ambrose said, “No one ever said justice was free.” The trio slowly surrounded the ring and struck in unison, physically dismantling Maddox before unleashing the triple powerbomb on the overmatched ex-official.

That, it seemed, was Cena’s cue. Emulating The Shield’s time-honored tactic, the 10-time WWE Champion struck from the crowd, with Ryback and Sheamus entering through similar routes to surround The Shield in the ring. With a crew of The Shield’s old victims blocking any escape up the ramp, the trio had no choice but to mix it up with the triumvirate of powerhouses. It wasn’t long before they found themselves driven back from whence they came while Cena smirked in the ring, having finally given his tormentors a taste of their own medicine.

But Cena wasn't done there: After Raw went off the air, the 10-time WWE Champion laid down a jaw-dropping challenge before the WWE Universe: At the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, Cena demanded The Shield answer to himself, Ryback and Sheamus in the form of a Six Man Tag Team Match.

Bourbon Street, we hope you're ready for this one.
